Fitness in Dance

Hi, I'm Carlo Aloia.

I am not just a Burn the Floor dancer, I am also a certified Personal Trainer and today I would like to take you through fitness connected to dance.

Ever wondered what the definition of fitness is? There are two points of view on this:

  1. Firstly, physiological relevance and concerns all those psycho-physical characteristics which, put together, offer a picture of good health.

  2. Secondly, sporting, functional-performance or aesthetic culture relevance.

Let us touch on the second point and, in particular, in relation to dancing. When we think about dance fitness there are five main areas we need to address. These are:

  • Strength: also related to muscle mass and ratio to fat mass. This is very important to me, and I have developed my strength as a male dancer in Burn the Floor, as you need a lot of it for lifting girls on stage.

  • Speed: this is related to nerve and muscle aspects. This point is so important during Burn the Floor’s Magalena number, which is super speedy. Developing speed as a dancer helps me to transfer the body weight from foot to foot easily.

  • Endurance / Stamina: this is related to normal weight, cardiovascular and respiratory fitness. Performing a full Burn the Floor show is like running a marathon. Developing my endurance and stamina has definitely helped me to survive and enjoy every performance I give in Burn the floor.

  • Coordination / Joint mobility and muscle flexibility: this of course helps a dancer control their body, an absolute must with some of the intricate moves we have to execute during the show.

  • Aesthetic: the physical appearance for me is fundamental to feeling more confident as a dancer. Looking good and feeling good makes you so much more self-assured on stage.

Whether you are professional dancer or dance for fun, developing these five elements of fitness in yourself will help to improve your enjoyment of dance and elevate your passion to the next level.

I hope you have enjoyed this little article on fitness connected to dance. Hope to see you soon at a Burn the Floor performance.

My most sincere greetings

Carlo Aloia
